Some Considerations Around Scope of Practice
If you've read my bio and about my services, you may have noticed that I provide both 1:1 Mentorship and Coaching and I'm Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). What this means is that I have a strong background and understanding of the importance of ethics and professional conduct through my work as a counsellor AND the work that I do with folks differs from clinical counselling in a few important ways. Here are some important points of overlap and distinction:
-
Counselling directly addresses mental health concerns and may spend more time focussing on emotions, past experiences and trauma.
-
In 1:1 Mentorship and Coaching, our focus is on present moment experience and is process oriented, meaning our work together can grow and adapt. Emotions and past experiences may surface during the session. Together we can hold them in Presence in an embodied way, with kindness and respect AND profound healing can happen when we do this.
-
In 1:1 Mentorship and Coaching, the focus remains on the here and now and if there are difficult traumas that still need to be processed it can be both challenging and unskillful to proceed with certain practices. In some cases working 1:1 with a skilled trauma professional may be more appropriate. If this is the case, I am happy to direct you to the appropriate resources to help you find the support that you are looking for.
-
In 1:1 Mentorship and Coaching, similar to many counsellors, I work with a trauma informed lens, meaning that I value your personal life experiences that brought you to where you are today. I honour your unique ways of knowing and being in the world and endeavour to be transparent in our interactions. I view myself more as a companion on the journey, with you being the expert of your lived experience. This process is a co-creation and you are in the driver's seat. For me this is a crucial part of the healing process.
-
In 1:1 Mentorship and Coaching, as in counselling, I have you read and sign an informed consent, which outlines in more detail scope of practice, what to expect in a 1:1 session with me and limits of confidentiality.
